That hard work paid off!<br><br>Not only did this little blue elephant become an incredible doctor, known beyond her little village in the Land of Fire for her skills and care...
 She raised a family and became the leader of her family of blue elephants. She taught all the other elephants that they could be anything they wanted to be. In fact, in her family, it became completely normal for girls to be leaders of their own families!<br><br>As Raisa grew into an older, wiser, slower-moving elephant, she moved with her family to a new village - in the Land of The Free. She always remembered one thing - challenge yourself and you will do great things! She kept challenging herself as she grew older - sewing, playing card games, cooking food, learning new words and languages, and doing crossword puzzles. Most importantly, Raisa taught her elephant family to work hard and challenge themselves to achieve great things.  Even as every other animal had to look down to see her little face, they all looked up to her.<br><br>''Afterward:''<br><br>I know that this story is very different from the other memorials left for her. My children were, unfortunately, not lucky enough to know her - to experience the joy of doing “Patience” (card game); shopping for teeny tiny (but very WIDE) shoes at nordstrom rack; folding and pinching shekerbura; sneaking up to her room to find she fell asleep to the russian radio again. This little story was written as a way to share the power that was Baba Raya with my children in a simple way they will understand.<br><br>Anyone who knew Baba Raya would likely think an elephant was the least likely animal to represent her - a tiny woman who seemed to physically shrink each year as she got older, even though her personality and sphere of influence was much larger than what her little body suggested. However, for a very specific reason, I have always associated my babushka with elephants. I learned early on that elephants create matriarchal societies, in which the female elephants will lead the herd. Although Baba Raya raised my dad - a very stubborn, loud, leader of an elephant himself, it was always clear who was the boss - Babushka. One look from her could shut any one of us up quickly. That power was amazing, wielded by such a tiny lady! It also seemed clear that she was raising the other females in our family to lead our own herds, while maintaining the importance of family.<br><br>For all the lessons she taught me, I am so grateful and will keep trying to learn.

 В этом году бабушке исполнилось бы 100 лет. А мне будет 50, столько - сколько было ей, когда мое рождение присвоило ей титул «бабы Раи». Даже не верится! Жучка за внучку, внучка за бабку... неужели и у меня когда-нибудь будут внучки? Будут ли они мною гордиться, хотеть провести со мной каникулы, слушать мои истории? Время покажет.<br>

Сшила я на ней за эти годы и свадебное покрывало, и свой костюм для Венецианского карнавала, и пальто для плюшевого мишки моей дочки Раечки (Риси). По-прежнему поворачивается в замке старинный ключик, сверкают золотые узоры, исправно ходит вверх и вниз знаменитая патентованная иголка, крепкими узелками любовно вшивая в канву воспоминаний новые лоскутки.
